Crispy Air-Fried Haloumi Fries
Serves 1-2
Time 15 minutes
Ingredients
1 block (about 180g) haloumi cheese
⅓ cup wholemeal flour
1 large egg, beaten
1 cup whole wheat breadcrumbs
½ tsp smoked paprika
½ tsp garlic powder
¼ tsp black pepper
Extra virgin olive oil spray
Spicy Yoghurt Sauce
½ cup Greek yoghurt
1 tbsp sriracha or harissa
A squeeze of lemon juice
Salt to taste
Method
Slice the haloumi into thick “fries” (about 1 cm or 1/2 inch thick). Pat the slices dry with paper towels to remove excess moisture, which helps the coating stick better.
Place the flour in a shallow bowl. In a second bowl, add the beaten egg. In a third bowl, combine the breadcrumbs, smoked paprika, garlic powder, and black pepper.
Coat each haloumi stick in the flour, shaking off any excess. Then dip the floured haloumi into the beaten egg, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat each piece in the seasoned breadcrumbs, pressing gently to make sure the crumbs adhere.
Preheat the air fryer to 200°C (390°F) for a couple of minutes.
Place the breaded haloumi fries in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving a little space between each piece. If needed, cook in batches to avoid overcrowding. Lightly spray the haloumi fries with olive oil to help them get golden and crisp.
Air fry for 8-10 minutes, flipping halfway through, until they’re golden brown and crispy on the outside.
Mix the ingredients for the spicy yoghurt dipping sauce.
Serve the haloumi fries hot with a bowl of the spicy yoghurt dipping sauce on the side.
